Tony's Talk - INNOVATIONS 2025 WE ARE BACK

Tony's Talk - INNOVATIONS 2025 WE ARE BACK

We are very excited to have recently announced the date for next year’s Innovations 25 Exhibition to be held at the iconic Home of Bolton Wanderers Football Club (currently known as the Tough Sheet Community Stadium) on 2 February 2025.

Innovations 23 was our best attended yet and we were fortunate to welcome more exhibitors than ever before. We plan to make next year’s event even bigger and better and to bring even more Industry Innovations to you on the day. The anticipation and momentum is already building in the Whitley Team! Please put the date in your diaries and come and join us on the day.

We are also excited to bring you our 125th Anniversary Buyers Guide, with our uptodate product range and updated service details. It is amazing how much our product range has evolved even in the short time since the previous Buyers Guide was published. Our extensive Packaging product range has been dramatically changed due to our compliance with current packaging legislation, the ban on expanded polystyrene products and plastic cutlery particularly.

It is a very clear consequence of the bans on polystyrene products and plastic cutlery (which were generally manufactured in the UK) to force usage onto non-banned products such as bagasse biopackaging, birchwood cutlery and plastic lined paper cups and plastic lids which are generally made in China.

Apparently it is good for the environment to ship containers half way around the world instead of using locally manufactured products!

The non-banned products apparently make better litter… The costs of making these replacement products in the UK or Europe due to energy, raw material and water costs are unfeasible… Maybe the solution would be to educate people not to throw litter into the gutter?

And by the way and in addition to last year’s product bans, the Rule Makers in Westminster and beyond have all sorts of devilish plans for product and takeaway packaging in the pipeline, introduced through the Expanded Producer Regulations (EPR). With the introduction of these Regulations they are intending to pass on the cost of packaging waste collection, recycling and disposal costs back onto all businesses that “produce” the packaging! The implications for our trade are yet to be fully understood but the indications are not favourable to say the least...

Finally, we were sad to say farewell to our brilliant, longstanding colleague, Emyr Parry, who retired over the summer. Em has been a Leader and Stalwart within Team Whitley for over 30 years and has made a great contribution to the management of the company. Fortunately, he leaves behind an experienced, capable and motivated Team which he has helped to train and create. We wish Em and his wife Julie a long, happy, healthy and exciting retirement with thanks and best wishes from us all.
